Why Becoming Picture Perfect on your Wedding Day isn’t as Simple as it Looks

Hello Gorgeous!

When you think about all of the exciting details of your wedding, you’re probably envisioning how they’re going to look in your photos. When you’re trying on your wedding attire, you might find yourself envisioning your dress flowing down the aisle, how the pop of color in your bow tie might match the flowers, or even how the velvet ribbon around your napkins brings texture to your design. But on the day of, it’s rare that the couple really gets to appreciate all of these little details. It’s not until you get your wedding gallery back from your photographer that you get to absorb the elegance and heart-warming details of your big day.

So when you think about your photography team, you need to be able to trust that they’ll do your vision justice, give you the photos that you’ll obsess over for the rest of your life, and be a positive force for you both on the wedding day! Choosing the right photography team isn’t just about loving someone’s portfolio or Instagram feed; it’s about finding professionals who understand your vision, your personalities, and your priorities.

As planners, we’ve seen firsthand how the right photography team can elevate the entire experience — and how the wrong fit can create unnecessary stress. So, let’s talk about how to confidently find the photography team that’s perfect for you.

Start With Style (But Don’t Stop There)

Photography style sets the tone for how your wedding day will be remembered, so understanding the difference between approaches is key.

Editorial photography is polished, intentional, and magazine-worthy. It often involves guided posing, curated moments, and a focus on composition and fashion-forward details. On your wedding day, this might look like a photographer who offers more direction, coaching, and structure to your photo sessions. They might pause to perfect lighting, posture, or spacing. They’re going to thrive during portraits, details, and family photos, having a calm, curated approach that prioritizes beautiful details. This style often feels luxurious because nothing is left to chance — details are adjusted, moments are curated, and the end result is highly polished.

Documentary photography focuses on more candid, real moments as they unfold with minimal interruption or direction. This style captures authentic emotion, movement, and storytelling as photographers blend into the background and let you do you. If you value authenticity, organic moments, and unscripted memories, a more candid approach may resonate with you. Less posing and more freedom to move naturally creates images that feel emotional and real — like memories frozen in time.

Now, in this case, you CAN have your cake and eat it too!

Many modern photography teams blend both styles, offering guidance when it matters (portraits, family photos) and stepping back during emotional moments (ceremony, speeches, dancing). With this kind of photography team you’ll end up having a relaxed experience and elevated images.

There’s also a growing trend toward wedding photography that feels soft, nostalgic, and a little dreamy — often described as vintage or film-inspired. This aesthetic draws its look from classic film stocks (like Kodak Portra or Fuji) and is characterized by gentle grain, warmer tones, softer contrast, and sometimes intentional blur or texture that evokes a timeless, heirloom quality rather than crisp digital precision. Some photographers actually shoot on analog film, while others achieve the look digitally through careful editing that mimics film’s unique color science and texture. This style will give you photos that feel romantic, nostalgic, and a little like treasured memories rather than sharply polished images. - Don’t worry, this does not have to be the entirety of your gallery either; some photography teams will incorporate this style into bits and pieces, if requested.

As you research photographers, spend time saving images you love and noticing patterns, but remember — photographers with similar aesthetics can still deliver very different experiences on the wedding day and personality matters more than you think.

Editing Style

Take some time, too, to look at the editing style of each photography team. Dive into their websites, Instagrams, and ask them for full wedding galleries for you to look through. Not only do you want to make sure you LOVE the way they ‘tell the story’, but you also want to make sure that the editing style goes with your home and decor!

Pro Tip: Walk through your house and see what colors, vibrancy, brightness, etc., you are already drawn to. When you are looking at photography teams, make sure that their style goes well with yours! That way, when you blow up your gorgeous wedding photos, you love them just as much as they hang in your home.

Vibe Check

Your photographers will be with you for the majority of your day and many of the most intimate moments. They’ll witness family dynamics, emotional exchanges, and high-stress transitions. You should feel comfortable expressing yourself to them, understood when you do, and supported by them, no matter what. When you have that first ‘interview’ with a photographer, and you come in with a buzz of excitement and nerves, ask yourself:

  • Do they put you at ease? Are they listening to us and understanding our priorities?

  • Do they communicate clearly? Do we have similar communication styles or at least ones that mesh together?

  • Do I believe in their talent and trust them with my vision?

When you feel relaxed with your photographer, your photos reflect that authenticity.

Art & Expertise

Weddings move quickly, emotions run high, and timelines matter. A seasoned wedding photography team knows how to anticipate moments before they happen and react in a way that makes you feel seen and human — from quiet nerves before the ceremony to joyful chaos on the dance floor. This is why it’s important to ask how long they have been shooting weddings (specifically), how many weddings they photograph each year, how they work alongside planners, and how they handle unexpected changes. Experience brings calm, and calm is invaluable on a wedding day.

Beyond Pricing…

Thoughtful questions help you understand how a photography team truly operates:

  • How would you describe your approach?

  • Will there be a second shooter?

  • How do you manage timelines and family photos efficiently?

  • How do you handle low-light or indoor venues?

  • What’s your backup plan in case of an emergency?

Clear, confident answers signal professionalism, preparation, and experience.

Value vs. Cost

When comparing packages, consider what’s included — the amount of coverage hours, engagement sessions, rehearsal dinners, second shooters, albums, and turnaround times. A professional team brings backup equipment, refined processes, thoughtful guidance, and seamless communication. The least expensive option isn’t always the best value.

When comparing the pricing of photography, here is our biggest tip: Make sure the packages you are comparing are comparable in terms of inclusions. If you have questions about this, talk with your CWP to help you understand AND work with the photography teams about curating a more custom quote to help you see where costs are incurred AND how packaging itself can help you save overall.

Photography plays a significant role in the overall luxury feel of your wedding. Luxury isn’t just about expensive equipment or dramatic images — it’s about consistency, calm under pressure, attention to detail, and the ability to make couples feel confident and cared for. From how details are captured to how moments are guided and preserved, an experienced photography team works with your planning team to elevate the entire experience.

One of the biggest advantages of working with a planner is access to trusted photography teams we’ve collaborated with time and time again. We know who communicates well, stays calm under pressure, and consistently delivers beautiful results. When your planner and photographer work in sync, you can feel how easy and effortless the day runs
